This
quaint museum gives visitors a glimpse of traditional
rural life in the Appenzell region, including the handcrafts
and customs still very much alive in this area. Pride
of place is given to the «Silvsterchläus»
(New Year's mummers). Visitors can also try their hand
at «Talerschwingen» (making music with a
coin in a bowl), ringing cowbells, acting as mummers
or playing the «Hackbrett». The museum is
located in a double house in the center of Urnäsch.
The old house is shown traditional daily life in detail:
transhumance, life on the alps, naïve painting,
music traditional. Exhibits also include such ancient
traditional handcrafts as bell-making, leatherworking
and carving wooden utensils.
The new house is used for temporary exhibitions. At
the moment the naïve painter «Hans Zeller»(1897
1983) special portraits and landscapes is shown.
